Applying for a Blue Badge Parking Permit for your vehicle

Blue Badge parking scheme for disabled people

Applications

The Blue Badge application process has now changed to meet the new legal requirements of the Department for Transport.

Please be advised that due to these changes, applications may take up to 10 weeks to process. If your application is ‘discretionary’ you may be asked to undertake a Mobility Assessment to determine your eligibility.

The Mobility Team do not send out reminder letters or letters confirming receipt of application forms and documents.

Please note that Blue Badges are no longer printed and distributed by the Mobility Team. Once an application has been agreed, it is sent electronically to a company in Banbury who print the Blue Badges and send them out directly to the applicant’s home address.

How to apply for a new or renew an expired Blue Badge

Disabled drivers or passengers who wish to apply for a Blue Badge should download, print and complete a Blue Badge application form.
Read the form carefully and complete all parts relating to your disability. Incomplete application forms will be returned, which could delay the processing of your badge.

You will need to:

enclose all documents required to prove your eligibility as stated in the guidelines
ensure that you read and sign the declaration
complete the medical information section, giving your GP or consultant's full details as a medical form may need to be sent to them directly from the Mobility Team.
return the completed document to the address on the form.
Fees and documentation
You will need:

a £2 cheque or postal order, made payable to the Royal Borough of Greenwich
proof of identity, for example a photocopy of a passport or United Kingdom driving licence
proof of address, for example a photocopy of a benefits letter or utility bill less than three months old. Mobile phone bills are not accepted
proof that you meet the automatic criteria.
Examples of proof that you meet the automatic criteria include:

a statement of award from the Department for Work and Pensions that shows you are receiving the higher rate of mobility allowance
a copy of your certificate of visual impairment, if you are registered blind
a copy of your war pensions allowance award letter, if you have one
a copy of your motability car agreement, if you have one.
For your application you will also need:

the medical information form, completed, signed and stamped by your GP if you do not qualify under the automatic criteria
one passport-size photograph with your name and address on the back.
Please note that you can use an old photograph if your appearance has not changed since it was taken.

Submit your form
Send the form, photos and cheque to the Mobility Team.

If your application is successful then you will receive your Blue Badge within five to ten days.

If it is unsuccessful then you will receive a letter within ten to 14 days.

If you are refused a Blue Badge you can appeal. Please put your appeal in writing to the Mobility Team and enclose supporting information from a GP or consultant.

If you are refused a pass after an appeal, you must wait six months before re-applying if circumstances change.

Renewal
Your Blue Badge is valid for three years. If you wish to continue using the Blue Badge, you will need to apply for a new one.

Make sure that you apply for a new Blue Badge six to eight weeks before your existing one expires.

This should ensure that, should your application be granted, there are no gaps between your existing badge and the new one
