Free Home Fire Safety Checks
You may be aware that the London Fire Brigade provide free home fire safety checks to Londoners – this allows them to assess, with the occupier, the hazards and risks from fire in their homes and to discuss how these can be minimised or removed. They will also check the correct operation of smoke alarms already fitted, advise if they are in the right place, and if none are present, fit as many as are needed, free of charge.
And importantly, they discuss making an escape plan to ensure that the occupier can quickly leave the property in the event of a fire.
A recent dwelling fire in Woolwich, involving a wheelchair-user, has highlighted the inherent delay they faced in responding to the smoke alarm. Whilst one person was able to leave the dwelling, the wheelchair-user was trapped in their bedroom and needed to be rescued.
Where there are inherent delays, like in this example, it is even more important to plan one’s escape, ensuring that the route is clear and locked doors can be opened quickly.

Client Coffee Morning
We have so far held 6 meetings in the last 12 months with some of our service users. These have proved to be very interesting and informative and are a great way of acquiring new information on disability issues and pooling ideas.
They have been very well attended and topics discussed have included Support Plans and ISF, Keep Warm Scheme, Handyperson Scheme, New Benefits and latest rates, Disabled Rail Cards, P2P Marketplace, Safeguarding Issues and many other subjects as well.
The next meeting will take place in 10th January 2013, in the cafe at the Forum @ Greenwich at 10.30 through to 12.30pm. We would like to invite more service users to come along and share experiences, learn new ideas and get to know the latest developments in the borough. It is also nice to come along, have a cup of coffee and meet people in similar circumstances.

Remark! Community welcomes all local residents of Greenwich to our new Deaf lunch club. Join us and catch up with friends old and new, over a homemade lunch and some warming drinks.
We will have available a free advocacy service to offer guidance on any issues you have, and to help with writing letters and making phone calls.
Entry is £3 to include lunch, tea and coffee.
A transport service will also be arranged for members who are unable to take public transport.
